Oli Smith's Guillain-Barre Syndrome GBS Recovery Fund
Organized by: Oli Smith
In June I became 80% paralyzed by a rare autoimmune condition Guillain-Barré Syndrome. GBS is a condition where the immune system attacks the nerves. I have received several expensive infusion treatments, and I am slowly getting better. Unfortunately even after an aggressive first round of treatment, GBS is still occurring in my system. Luckily this hasn't affected my head or my brain, at this point. It has caused me much stress mentally and physically. My chest was close to being paralyzed before I got treatment, and I had become short of breath. That is a fear with GBS because it makes it impossible to breathe, and causes death if unable to be put on life support fast enough. It all started in May when my feet went completely numb. Doctors had no clue at that point why that was happening. It just stayed in my feet until June. It took 6 weeks to receive proper diagnosis and get proper treatment. I don't know how long this is going to last? No one really knows at this point. Currently I am on unpaid medical leave from Sprint. Much progress will have to occur, including full use of my hands before I am able to return. This whole ordeal has drained me financially. I have no work related income. I appreciate all donations regardless of amount. Right now I can walk short distances slowly with walker. I have taken many nasty falls since this started. I have hit my head and sprained both ankles. Currently I have many needs that are not being met. I have racked up so many medical bills, some paid by insurance and others not. I can recover from most of this, but no Doctor knows how long it will take? I am trying to stay positive and take things one day at a time. I am going to keep fighting this and pray for the best recovery as possible.
