Former U.S. Navy SEAL Glen Doherty was killed in action September 11th, 2012 in Benghazi Libya. Glen, also known as “Bub”, was working as a Special Operations contractor in support of U.S. interests in the region. His unit came to the aid of Ambassador Stevens and his staff, as their compound came under heavy attack. Glen’s team fought against overwhelming enemy odds to rescue over twenty State Department personnel. After transporting everyone to another compound, his team came under additional enemy rocket and mortar fire. It was here that Glen gave his life in the defense of his fellow Americans. His operational excellence, and aggressive fighting spirit ensured that the remaining team and Department of State personnel were evacuated safely.
Glen’s extraordinary heroism reflected the highest traditions of the United States Special Operations Forces. In September each year Red Circle Foundation and The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation join together to honor the memory of Glen Doherty and recall the bravery he and his teammates exhibited on September 11th and 12th in Benghazi, Libya 2012 that saved over 20 innocent people.
We wanted to give the American public a tangible and positive way to remember Glen and at the same time encourage individuals to set new personal goals, giving them an incentive to persevere. The Crossfit community is very supportive of our event and we encourage Crossfit enthusiasts to get their gyms involved by participating in the Glen Hero of the Day Workout at their gym.
As citizens of our great nation, we all enjoy the benefits of having highly trained military personnel protect our freedoms throughout the world. At times, as Glen did, they pay the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect us.
Red Circle Foundation and The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation were established to provide support to Special Operators and their families. At Red Circle Foundation we believe that a strong family unit is paramount in maintaining the mental and physical strength that U.S. Special Operations Forces need to carry out their assignments overseas; our mission is to provide enrichment scholarships for the children of Special Operators, and emergency gap funding in support of the families of fallen and wounded heroes. The Glen Doherty Memorial Foundation helps current and former special operations professionals transition their leadership skills through education and training, enabling soldiers who are the ‘best of the best’ to redeploy themselves, and as a society, we all reap the benefits. Providing their children and families the ability to recreate; to learn and grow through having fun.
