BENEFITING: Genesis House, Inc.
The Genesis House mission is to promote the general welfare of victims of domestic and sexual violence by providing shelter, goods, and services while helping them find safety in their lives and the self-sufficiency and healing needed to become independent. To this end, it is also our mission to enlighten the community in the dynamics of domestic and sexual abuse and its prevention by providing comprehensive educational programs.
Genesis House employees, board members, and volunteers dedicate significant time and energy to make the most of the resources we have, but we are always in need of donations and volunteers. With only seven full-time employees serving nine counties, Genesis House staff has become expert at serving a large number of survivors with limited resources. Every donation helps us provide support and services needed to survivors of sexual and domestic violence throughout the region.
Supportive Housing Program: Genesis House maintains a multi-family dwelling called The Lodge, where people live together as they begin a new safe life with the help they need to pursue employment and independent living skills. This program was developed based on the knowledge that many women return to their abuser because they have nowhere else to go and the belief that these women will develop employment and household management skills if given a place to live without the burden of supporting themselves and their children independently.
Emergency Shelter Services: We provide a 5-bedroom multifamily emergency shelter, based upon a belief that victims of domestic and sexual violence have the right to a safe place to live, knowledge advocacy, and ongoing supportive services to help them meet their needs in times of crisis. It is our belief that the cycle of domestic abuse can be broken when victims are given options and opportunities to increase their knowledge and develop a support system.
Weekly Support Groups: Genesis House facilitates weekly support groups, to provide victims and surviors of domestic violence a safe place to meet and share their experinces, share ideas, and provide emotional support to one another. The groups are generally focused on a specific topics. A few of the meetings we have offered include cooking classes, yoga, and educational programs about sexual and domestic violence.
Children's Support Groups: During the meeting times for our regular support groups, we have activities for children available. This is a service that helps facilitate attendance for parents and also provides an opportunity to encourage children to express their thoughts and feelings. Examples of the activities include painting, sensory snow, and movie nights.
Advocacy: One of our most impactful services is the availability of advocates to accompany survivors to meetings with legal and medical professionals, law enforcement, and court appearances. In addition, our advocates are available to accompany victims of sexual assault to the hospital for treatment and/or forensic exams.
The Genesis House philosophy is that victims should have access to immediate crisis intervention during emergency situations as well as continued support, advocacy, and educational opportunities. For this reason, Genesis House offers this variety of services, and provides support to survivors using a multi-faceted approach. We are greatly appreciative of anything you are able to give to help us to maintain and expand the programs available to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
