I'm excited to work for an organization so committed to giving local underserved students the opportunity to thrive!
The Bay Area is at an interesting crossroads right now. While we're witnessing incredible growth and innovation, too often we hear stories of our local youth getting left behind, lacking access to higher education and the booming tech economy in our backyard.
High school drop out rates in San Francisco for Latinos and Black students are 22% and 24%, respectively. At many top local tech companies, African Americans make up less than 5% of the workforce. And despite the fact that women make up 59% of the U.S. labor force, only 22% of leadership positions at tech companies are held by women. I could go on and on about the problem, but I want to offer some solutions.
There is so much that needs to be done to address the deep roots of poverty and inequality in this country, and here's where Genesys Works starts. We provide high school seniors with intensive training not just in technical skills, but also in professional skills like how to have a solid handshake, dress the part, and communicate-- the skills we all know are essential to surviving in a workplace and in life. We provide paid year-long internships at some amazing companies like Salesforce and Google where students are given real responsibility and mentorship. Then we provide ongoing college support, which is so critical because most of our students' parents never went to college.
Rather than fast-track students to a career, we get them to college, support their persistence, and then a professional career. Adults who hold a college degree make 40% more than their peers. Higher education is a proven pathway out of poverty, which is the ultimate goal for our students.
Our outcomes prove that we are meeting unmet needs of underrepresented minorities in STEM and technology. 95% of our students go to college, and 95% persist!
I've been inspired by the resilience, professionalism, and drive that our young professionals have, and I hope you will support this incredible organization with me!
