Genome Rhapsodies Book Tour
Organized by: Anna Meek
I'm really excited to announce that my third book, "The Genome Rhapsodies", is coming out in November, 2015! The book is an exploration of the question posed by Gregor Mendel: "What is Inherited, and How?" My father, Jay Meek, was a poet who died of fast moving, early onset Alzheimer's disease, which robbed him of his beautiful language skills. Many of the poems in the book are about the years I spent caring for him and wondering if I would inherit the disease. These were also years I spent watching him use the language he had left, recombining the remaining fragments into gorgeous, if sometimes nonsensical, expressions of the world as he saw it. During this time, my daughter was born and she gained language. How is language something we inherit? And what do we make of it in our lives? Also during this time, the United States was actively engaged in military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; this was the world into which my daughter was born. How is war something we inherit? How can we take the old ways and the old structures and make of them something new, even beautiful?
This project has been a decade in the making, and I want to share it with people across the country. But poets don't get paid to tour, and poetry doesn't sell the way a Danielle Steele novel sells. So the only way for me to build a readership is to fund a book tour myself! I need YOUR help to cover the cost of the book launch on November 10 (mark your calendars!) and travel costs so I can do readings in California, Oregon, Washington, Ohio, Michigan, Massachusetts, and, well, maybe a state near you! It's like a garage band touring the country in a beat up old van, but without the amplifiers. Or the beat up old van!
