BENEFITING: The V Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 05, 2017
I'm so excited and honored to be running my first marathon through NYC as a member of Team V representing the V Foundation for Cancer Research!! I learned of The V Foundation and Coach Valvano probably in my teens by virtue watching the ESPY Awards on ESPN. Even more so, only when I got to college and being immersed in the basketball centric university that is Syracuse did I really get exposed to and learn about Jim Valvano, Jimmy V Week, and all the work the college basketball community does in remembrance of one of their most adored colleagues who was lost too early to cancer. I'm thrilled to be checking off a bucket list item by running NYC, but even more so, I'm ecstatic to represent a fantastic organization and fundraise for something that afflicts too many people.
Unfortunately just about everyone knows someone affected by cancer and I'm certainly going to be running with several people in mind I've met through all walks of life. Especially for those that know me, I've been lucky enough to grow up in and be a part of a tight knit German community. I've had the pleasure of meeting so many great people over the years if it's only been for a short while, several years, or practically my entire life. It pains me to see people I've known for so long and have deep admiration for affected by cancer the way they are. I want to continue to do my part for those I know that are fighting right now, those that fought and won, and in memory of those we've unfortunately lost. With your contribution, we can come closer to finding a cure!
Below is some background on the Jimmy V Foundation and links to articles highlighting some of the work they do that I encourage everyone to check out.
The V Foundation was founded by ESPN and award-winning NC State basketball coach Jim Valvano. Coach Valvano was diagnosed with cancer in 1993. When he created the Foundation, Jim knew that it was too late for research to save him, but he spent his last months alive creating a legacy of hope for others diagnosed with this debilitating disease. Watch his inspirational speech from the 1993 ESPY Awards above or here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuoVM9nm42E
In the past 24 years, The V Foundation has awarded more than $170 million to cancer research and related programs nationwide.
Jim Valvano’s “Don’t Give Up . . . Don’t Ever Give Up!”® spirit is alive now more than ever, and it is the perfect motto to carry us through the largest marathon in the world. With continued support, we will forge ahead with innovative research. Join us on Team V or support us through a donation – either way, you are making a difference and saving lives. There is not a moment to lose in the fight against cancer.
