THE STORY:

EMpower connects the Emerging Markets community with locally led organizations in EM countries. With 61 active grants in 14 countries, EMpower has invested over $8 million since 2000. EMpower (www.empowerweb.org) is an international grant-maker dedicated to empowering young people from poor communities in EM countries worldwide. They look for great locally-led organizations on the ground that are addressing the most pressing problems for at-risk youth in their communities, such as lack of relevant education and employment opportunities, trafficking, HIV/AIDS, violence and abuse, early marriage and unwanted pregnancies. EMpower makes grants to improve opportunities for young people in four key areas of youth development: health, education, leadership, livelihoods. Given that there are 1.5 billion young people worldwide, constituting about 30% of the populations in EM countries, investing in young people has huge potential to change not only their lives but also their nations.

Last year alone EMpower invested $1,197,125 via 38 grants and directly reached 9,120 youth and indirectly reached approximately 16,000 through peer exchanges, family engagement and community development.

A few results from previous year’s grants:

Of 13 education grants, one result: Ikamva Youth in Cape Town Townships, South Africa coached 567 youth in school subjects to improve their academic achievement and ensure job readiness or continuing tertiary education.

Of 12 health grants, one result: Nishtha, West Bengal, India, trained 1,766 youth to educate their peers on preventive health, and 12,206 received health info.

Of 19 leadership grants, one result: Mujeres al Derecho, Barranquilla, Colombia trained over 600 youth to take on active leadership roles in their communities.

Of 15 livelihoods grants, one result: Friends for Street Children, HCMC, Vietnam, had 68 youth establish their own sustainable micro enterprises.

I really appreciate all of your support and thank you for considering a generous donations.
