Organized by: Nick Tutolo
EVENT DATE Oct 21, 2016
We are the Guerrilla Teacher Academy and we need your help to make our dream of going to the Facing Race conference in Atlanta, GA a reality! The Facing Race conference is "a unique collaborative space for racial justice movement making, Facing Race is the largest multiracial, inter-generational gathering for organizers, educators, creatives and other leaders." The conference will provide a unique opportunity for us to engage and learn from other educators, organizers and activists so that we can take our knowledge back to our classroom, school and city and and apply it. We are looking to send as many of our members as possible to the conference. Your donation will be spread equitably amongst our members to fund conference registration, airfare and hotel costs. The more funding that we receive, the more members we will be able to send to this outstanding experience. About the Guerrilla Teacher Academy: The Guerrilla Teacher Academy (GTA) nimble wisdom task force taking on the evolving challenges of our institution and education at large. We began 4 years ago as a small group of teachers who care deeply about education and the impact that it creates on our students. GTA builds teachers as intellectual professionals through bi-weekly sessions spent developing initiatives (e.g. restorative justice, schedule redesign) and monthly breakfast clubs spent discussing issues (e.g. equity, innovation, generous orthodoxy). We see the issues of race and equity in education as some of the most important if not the most important issue that affects the students across this country. We see creating equitable classroom spaces and schools that honor the culture of all students as the foundation upon which all classrooms and schools should be built. No student should have to sit in a classroom in which they do not see themselves show up in the content and culture of the space. To this end, we believe that all teachers should dig deep and address their own biases and the way that they show up in the classroom. It is our duty as teachers to ensure that our classroom is a place that all students can let their brilliance shine. We have devoted our time, energy and often financial resources in our quest to become better educators and enlighten people beyond the walls of our classroom. Members of the GTA have attended conferences across the country such as Teach to Lead, Teacher Powered Schools, Green Buildings Alliance, and many others. Each time, we have brought back valuable information and applied to the classroom and shared practices with others via blogs, podcasts, and presentations. With your help, we can gain more valuable insights and connections by attending the Facing Race Conference. Thank you for your time, love and support!
