BENEFITING: PROJECT REBUILD
Project REBUILD is the YouthBuild USA program in Canton, Ohio. Our program is a comprehensive work readiness and youth development program focusing on education, work readiness skills (using construction training as a vehicle to teach those skills), and overall life skills. The young people we work with are between the ages of 16 to 24 and are not attending school on a regular basis, are unemployed, and many times have made mistakes in their lives. They commit to Project REBUILD's nine month program and work hard to finish their high school diploma or GED, learn both soft and hard skills for the workplace, create strategies to overcome barriers, learn to give back by providing service hours to other organizations, and become productive, contributing members of their community. During their nine months, they are surrounded by a network of caring staff members, mentors, and champions that love and encourage them every step of the way. As part of their hands-on construction training, our members are learning green building techniques and are involved in rehabbing a single-family house in to an energy efficient, LEED home for a family in Canton. As they learn about green building techniques, many times they're not exposed to the variety of materials to feel and see demonstrated. Going to Greenbuild International in Boston in November of 2017 will allow them the opportunity to not only see and feel green building items, but they'll also be practicing their personal interaction skills and presentation skills as they work in the YouthBuild booth that's part of the event.
