BENEFITING: ALS Association Greater New York Chapter
My Sister Kathleen at age 50 was diagnosed with ALS on 8-9-10, following years of mysterious health issues. We have no family history. We have lost both our parents to aggressive cancers and our brother,Doug to a heart attack, both serious horrible diseases. Having been through over a year of medical procedures such as a feeding tube, pacemaker and a permanant intravenous port, we now see this is one of lifes most hopeless, dibilitating diseases.
Not only is there no cure but there is no treatment either, unlike Cancer with hopeful radiation or chemotherapy,ALS only has one small drug, Rilutek which may or not not sustain life by a few months when taken daily. Most all ALS patients end up wheelchair bound with ventilators and lost of speech and all other muscle movement. It is a depressing diesease and the latter part of your life does not include much quality therefor making that one drug fairly useless.
Like many other adult patients,Kathleen is a mother to two boys and has been married to a wonderful husband for over 25 years. Her condition has left her unable to work anymore and her husbands income barely covers their monthly bills. Although surrounded by friends and family the current tough economic times make it difficult to receive monetary help.
As one of her primary caretakers I would like to help fundraise as well as raise awareness for ALS to assist in quickly finding some type of cure or process to slow down the disease. I would also like to find small ways to help raise funds for her quality of life and daily expenses to bring her less stress.
