BENEFITING: APNE AAP INTERNATIONAL INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 10, 2013
Empowering women to gain independence is just the beginning.
This summer I have an incredible opportunity. En route to my Masters of Public Health, I get to complete a 10 week internship in the field. Well, I dreamt big, and the field ended up being India. New Delhi, to be exact.
Of course I'm already trying to plan my outfits. June in India. 115 degree weather, 21 million other sweaty people, exhaust fumes and city-smells everywhere... But wait, I'm doing this for a REASON. The reason is the Indian organization I'll be working for. http://apneaap.org
Apne Aap was founded by 22 women from Mumbai’s red light district in 2002 and is at the heart of the fight against sex trafficking in India.
As Apne Aap's Monitoring and Evaluation Intern, I'll be working six days a week!! to develop some key indicators of trafficking that they can use in future outreach and programming. This is an incredible opportunity for my graduate work, but even moreso a chance to share the hearts and culture of these inspiring women. I hope that while I'm survivng a crash course in Hindi and how to hail a rickshaw, I can provide something meaningful to these women and their families.
This is where you come in! The internship is unpaid. I'll be honest, I've been living off of student loans and have little savings. It costs $1500-2000 to fly to India and about $1000 per month to live in New Delhi. [I've been advised to spend "a little more" to ensure my comfort (A/C) and safety.] Then there's tuition, a travel visa, vaccinations, anti-diarrheal medication, a travel toothbrush...
I can only do it with your help. Any excess funding raised will be donated to Apne Aap.
