In the past 2 years Robin D, a 50 year old woman who has broken her shoulder and hip, opposite side at the same time, had a failed surgery on the hip and then a hip replacement that has not work well. When the hip replacement was being done she received a diagnosis of cancer, her third. She had already survived kidney and breast cancer. (DNA showed they are not related ) The treatment for the earlier cancers had left her bones more fragile and prone to break and that is why she suffered such devastating breaks when she fell.

Robin has had 4 surgeries in the last year related to the cancer as well as 6 months of chemo. She is scheduled for another surgery more chemo and 5 weeks of radiation 5 days a week. She needed an IV infusion of iron because she had lost so much iron. The iron loss resulted in exhaustion on top of everything else.

Her doctors are recommending a motorized scooter for her but her insurance (Medicare) will not pay for it. They say she can get around her apartment so that she does not need it. It is a very tiny apartment and she does get around it but she is basically confined to it and has been for two years.
Because of the cancer and multiple complication she was unable to complete all of the rehab for the hip. There is also a concern the hip did not heal properly, as well, making walking both difficult and painful. Walking is also physically exhausting because of the iron depletion and chemo effects.

Robin does not have a car so has no other way to see the “outside world”. A scooter would greatly expand the world that she has lived in these last two years and boost her morale as well.
She has not yet been able to have her shoulder repaired because every time that she has planned it there has ended up being a need for an urgent surgery related to the cancer. She had planned again to have her shoulder repaired at the end of October when the newest tumor was found and that took priority over the shoulder repair. Without the shoulder being repaired she does not have use of her hand and cannot use a cane, crutches, walker, rollator (walker w/seat) or manual wheelchair.

It is because of all of these complex problems that I am bringing this to you and asking for your assistance in raising money to purchase a motorized scooter so Robin is not confined to just the 4 walls of her apartment. There will be times during her continued treatment that she may wish to stay in because of the ill effects of it(treatment) but I know given the freedom to get beyond the 4 walls that if she is feeling well she will go out.
