THE STORY:

The JTSD Greenhouse started as a passion for one 6th grade teacher to teach his students about hard work, learning where your food comes from, and donating to a local food pantry. It has grown into a passion for the 6th grade teachers and the students to go bigger by utilizing the greenhouse, the raised beds, and a new upper garden to create something our community does not have....a Farmer's Market! The goal is to teach our learning standards from Science and Math through the greenhouse: calculating germination time, measuring the sizes of the plants, estimating cost and many other skills. Students would be communicating with members of the community as well as patrons to the market, researching what and when to plant, creating the advertising pieces and marketing tools needed to run and maintain a small business. Our hopes are to be able to not only be sustainable, but provide vegetable and produce to our school, and also local food organizations.

At this time, we have one high-tunnel greenhouse that needs electrical, heating and a water source. The tools that we have are limited to 6 shovels, 6 rakes, etc. The needs are greater than the school budget allows! The immediate need to be successful throughout the year would be a heater to regulate heat in the greenhouse, water to the greenhouse for plants and hanging baskets. Durable garden tools for 69 students to be able to do their jobs at one time.

We see this as a way of life for our students teaching them responsibility, a hard work ethic, and positive socialization skills. We can learn curriculum from a new approach and that is the goal of the JTSD Greenhouse.
