Getting out of the System
Organized by: Melanie Cribbs
I am a product of how the system treats survivors of abuse~I have lost my home, gained a tremendous about of debt from college tuitions for my 4 children and a business that I had owned with my ex husband. I was made to pay child support even though none of the children lived with, saw or spent time with their father and I was made to pay all medical bills not covered by either insurance or Medicade. I was made to deal with all of these things while dealing with a man that emotionally and verbally abused me on a daily basis. I had tried to get restraining orders to force him to stop but was told by the local sheriffs that the only thing the order would do would be to anger my ex and there was really nothing they (the sheriffs) could do to stop him from harassing me.
I want to create a non-profit that will help survivors create their own home from green, alternative building products, keep the mortgage to a minimum and by working with experts in the field of alternative building allow the survivor to create a life long income source by becoming qualified to inspect alternative building homes, become a solar installer professional, water reclamation specialist, a thermal mass heating installer/inspector. The list is endless but the way the system currently handles survivors is to place them in a half way house for a maximum of 6 months and during those 6 months the training that is available is minimum and these people are not able to make a living wage that will provide for their family's needs or put a roof over their head.
When a person can not make ends meet they will eventually end up going back to their abuser. The cycle of abuse will start over after a very short period of time and the survivor will move back out for the maximum allowed time of 6 months. Once a survivor has done this 4-5 times the abuser will usually go and find the survivor and will beat the survivor to an extreme extent or will kill them.
The money raised from this fund raiser will be used to purchase a small plot of land so that I can start building a community of Survivors that are willing to move beyond the life that they have been living in. The community will be as self sufficient as possible with a built in Neighborhood Watch program and as the commmunity grows the people living there will be intrical parts of society and not needing to live off the system that did not help them to create a better life.
Everyone deserves to have a wonderful life and I am hoping to create this for any Survivor that wants to take advantage of this program.
