BENEFITING: GOLF FIGHTS CANCER
ORGANIZER: GOLF FIGHTS CANCER
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
Sometimes you just have to go for it.
No more “I think I might be able to do that.” No more “I can’t go that far.” No more sitting around watching everyone else support great causes. For all the miles I run for fun every day of the year, I finally decided to train to run 26.2 - in a row - and for something more impactful than a good start to the day.
Why now? The first reason is the town of Watertown. I have been personally connected to Watertown since the day I was born. Without even getting into the countless family and friends from Watertown - or every wedding, Christening, basketball game, dance or hangout on our resumes - how ingrained Watertown is can be easily summed up. My boys attend Sunday school at the same church my grandparents attended 60 years ago. It’s not coincidental, it’s generational. It is why when the events of last year brought people with machine guns through our nieces and nephews’ backyards and down the streets we know well, I thought “next year.”
Then along came Golf Fights Cancer, an organization founded in 2004 on the principle of friends helping friends whose lives have been touched by cancer. Over the past decade, GFC has raised over $3 million in support of cancer related charities and research, making 27 dedicated grants to 19 organizations, through its marathon and golf events. I am honored for this once in my lifetime opportunity. I am determined to do my part from now through April 21 and I would be most appreciative for any support you are able to offer to help fight a disease that has affected all of us.
