EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
Hi Family and Friends,
Running the Boston Marathon has always been on my "bucket list" but truthfully I've doubted that I could handle the winter training and 26.2 miles of hills and heartbreak. A number of things conspired to give me the nudge I needed to make this the year. I'm going to give this my best shot and I hope you'll support me along the way. Here's why I'm raising money and running the 2014 Boston Marathon.
To Fight Cancer- Cancer is relentless. Like so many of you, I'm surrounded by it. I've lost friends and too many family members to the disease. There is no more helpless feeling than witnessing my kids lose their Grandma and Meredith her mom. There is no greater fear than wondering where Cancer will strike next. I'm running because running makes me feel braver by the mile and raising money eases the helplessness. Golf Fights Cancer is doing amazing work and I'd like to help them help more people and fight for a cure. Every dollar you donate, I will match until I reach my goal so we can do twice the good together.
To begin living a healthier life- In October of 2013, I topped 220 lbs for the first time in my life. Pants didn't fit, my chin grew a second chin and I've never felt worse about myself. There's plenty of excuses for this. Too much sitting in airplane seats. Too many investor dinners. Too many cocktails. Too little exercise. It appears there was an inverse relationship between my success in business and my failure to live a healthy life. Stepping off that scale, I decided then that I needed to do something drastic to reverse this slide and commit to living a healthier and ultimately longer life. 26.2 miles in April is a start, not the end.
To reclaim Boston Marathon Monday- Marathon Monday is uniquely Boston and one of the many reasons I love this city. I have great memories of going to the Sox game in the morning and rolling onto Boylston Street to admire runners from around the world live their dream. Last year, the meaning of Marathon Monday was changed forever. I want to be part of rebuilding and reclaiming these memories, this day.
To inspire my kids to dream big - In October, the idea of completing a marathon seemed utterly impossible. Now that I'm more than half way through my training, it only seems highly improbable. It's an audacious goal. It will require discomfort, blind faith and lots of slushy sneakers to acheive. Like every parent, I want my kids to have success. But I also want them to sometimes reach too far, set goals that seem crazy to others and even fail. If they take anything away from this I hope they believe in themselves enough to set lofty goals, enjoy the climb and learn from the falls. Because in the inspirational words of Miley Cyrus which may or may not be on my running mix; "It's the climb."
Thank you for your support. Not just the financial kind. It means a great deal to me.
