THE STORY:

Volta Elementary serves girls from grades 1-8 in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood. In years past, Girls in the Game provided weekly after school programming to girls from Volta, giving them opportunities to try new sports, learn healthy habits and grow as leaders.

Because of a loss of funding, a regular After School Girls in the Game program was cut, but the enthusiam of the girls and the school administrators convinced Girls in the Game to keep coming back for one-day Game Day events every year. These three-hour snapshots of Girls in the Game continued to remind Volta and the girls why they loved the program.

Girls in the Game provides and promotes sports and fitness opportunities, nutrition and health education, and leadership development to enhance the overall health and well-being of girls. Since 1995, Girls in the Game has emerged as a leading girls' health and fitness organization in Chicago, with research from Loyola University proving the benefits of the programs after just one year of enrollment. Every year, Girls in the Game empowers more than 3,500 girls to make healthier choices and develop the confidence and leadership skills they need to succeed on and off the field.

Help Girls in the Game return to Volta Elementary School! Please take a minute to watch the video to hear from Volta's principal and girls alike on why the need is great for girls-only programming. Ninety-two percent of Volta students come from low-income families, who represent 38 different countries of origin. The opportunity to bring such diverse girls together to learn about teamwork, self-esteem and leadership skills will help design the blueprint for the future of the Albany Park neighborhood and Chicago itself.

Any funds raised above the $10,000 needed for one year of After School progamming will go to support other Chicago schools who are on Girls in the Game's waiting list.
