Clean water for schoolchildren to drink.
We are asking for monetary donations, which will be used to purchase water filtration systems for rural schools in Ghana (Africa). While working in Ghana for six months in 2010-2011, I worked in several rural schools, lecturing on the importance of health and hygiene.
When the talk focused on hydration, I knew that water drank by most rural residents was unfiltered and untreated, but I was surprised to see how dirty the water really was. School children drank from tanks that collected rainwater, or they carried water from streams and lakes. Dirty water is the number one cause of parasitic infection in children worldwide and a child that is constantly fighting infection cannot focus on learning. This is unacceptable and we want to help.
On May 8th, my friend Alex and I will be traveling back to Ghana. We hope to purchase as many clay pot water filters as we can for distribution to rural schools in Kpando, Volta Region. Last year, we distributed filters to over 20 schools and hope to expand this successful project this year.
