THE STORY:

Save the Date: Campaign Kick Off - Wednesday, September 18.  5:30pm - 8:00pm, HotelRed.  To learn more or to RSVP please go here.

Did you know that in Wisconsin only 22% of school-aged children with disabilities read at a proficient level, and that only 14.2% are proficient in math?

We know that adults and children with Down syndrome have the potential to do anything their typically developing counterparts can do.  But, it takes a combination of more time and effective therapies to help people with Down syndrome fulfill that potential.   Individuals with Down syndrome can, and do, live independently, maintain employment, go to college, become strong leaders, and much more if given the opportunity.

That is why we at the Madison Area Down Syndrome Society are excited to partner with Gigi's Playhouse!!  We are working to bring Gigi's Playhouse to Madison and South Central Wisconsin communities.  Gigi's Playhouse will offer a physical space where adults and children with Down syndrome can receive free, research-proven, educational tutoring and therapeutic programs.  People with or without disabilities can learn about community resources and celebrate life together.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GiGi’s Playhouses are Down syndrome awareness and educational centers that provide resources, specialized teaching, and support to individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the community. What started as a local playhouse in a suburb of Chicago has turned into an international phenomenon, spreading awareness and inspiration to everyone it touches.

GiGi’s offers over 20 different types of programs, 15 of which are educational in nature.  The program development is very strategic for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.

Each and every program has a purpose with specific goals in the areas of social skill development, speech and language, or academic achievement.

Our mission is to increase positive awareness of Down syndrome through national campaigns, educational programs, and by empowering individuals with Down syndrome, their families and the community.

Update: We know that many of have been curious about the specific programs the Playhouse will offer. Our Playhouse has the ability to offer dozens of programs that address specific therapy, educational, life skill, vocational and social needs. While we have not selected the handful of programs will be able to offer when the door open, the Playhouse's Management Team wanted to share with you some of the priorities we are currently working on. What we eventually offer will depend on the set up of our location, the volunteers and leaders that engage this effort, the success of our public fundraising efforts, and most importantly your feedback and insights. Here's what we are currently looking into:

1.  Open Play and Social Programming For People of All Abilities
2.  Improvement of Gross Motor Skills for Young People with Ds
3.  Language and Reading Programming for School-Aged Children with Ds.
4.  Mathematics Programming for School-Aged Children with Ds.
5.  Employment, College & Life Skill Programming for Teens & Adults with Ds.
