What's behind that Red Door on West Houston St.?
Bottom-line: cancer support for all
Like many people, over the years I have watched family and friends suffer the impact from various forms of cancer. Among all that pain and suffering, it occurred to me that I wanted and needed to make giving to cancer organizations an important part of my life and I hoped that I could and would have an impact in some way. I became a sucker for any email requesting donations for anything that is cancer-related. For over tens years, I have tried to align myself with organizations that were doing great work in medicine and research to find a cure, but I often felt that I wasn't having a tremendous impact with my check-writing, cancer runs and relays. They were all very well-financed organizations and I was but a tiny part of what they were doing. They were certainly advancing the important cause of finding cures and treatments for cancer, but I never really felt connected to their efforts, merely just dollars.
Several years ago, I was introduced to Gilda's Club, a organization that is placing cancer support, front & center. They align themselves with medical care by providing support groups, educational lectures, healthy lifestyles workshops and bonding through community--to anyone that walks through the Red Door! We often forget about the impact to patients, families and survivors that goes far beyond the medicine, doctors and treatments. Holding the hand of a patient or family member through the process and helping them understand what they are facing is a tremendous part of giving hope. Gilda Radner claimed that she was part of the "membership to an elite club I'd rather not belong to". Well, a Gilda's Club member is thankful that they turned the door handle to enter a organization that has become a hugely important part of hopefully guiding them to better outcomes.
I have finally found an organization that I think I can better align myself with through helping people better face the challenges that come with the battle to beat cancer.
