The Friends of Kalitala Foundation raises funds for girls in West Bengal, India. Like many others we travelled to India, met these young girls, and returned home forever changed with a new mission in life. Take a look at these statistics and tell me if you think the world could use a good kick in the pants!
60 million girls living in the developing world DO NOT attend primary school.
250,000 children SLEEP in the streets of Kolkata every night.
One in seven girls under the age of 15 is MARRIED OFF in developing countries.
And guess what, while you read this, a young girl is being TRAFFICKED into SLAVERY. "GIRLS RIGHTS ARE THE CAUSE OF OUR TIME".
The mother of one of our girls became a child bride at 9 and was forced to sell 2 of her 3 daughters. She and her remaining daughter were cared for by one of the NGOs we partner with. Today, she attends University!!! This is one of the many stories that inspire us to become increasingly ACTIVE and work to give girls the chance to be girls.
"The GIRLS TO BE"
We look at it this way, if we can provide shelter, food, medical attention, and of course an education, these girls will stay off the streets and they WILL NOT become one of the horrific statistics we mention above. It is unfair that your place of birth predetermines your life potential.
Through everyone's effort, these girls will become active members of society, self sufficient, will marry whomever they want at the right time and have children when they are prepared. They will have REVERSED the cycle of poverty by clearing the biggest hurdle. EDUCATION.
We are currently raising money for a new project. We are partnering with local NGOs in Kolkata, to fund the launch of a new home for our young girls (12+). This is a critical age, when families could marry their daughters off. At this time in their lives, they need our help more than ever. Pushing education as the top priority but also offering vocational training programs (tailoring, sewing, embroidery, photography, and computer labs), these wonderful girls will become self sufficient women with careers or becoming partners in organized cooperatives.
We are giving them the chance they were denied by their birth place. In our society it is a BIRTH RIGHT.
We are hoping you will lend your support no matter how big or small. Please click the donate button to contribute to the Friends of Kalitala Foundation. If you can not contribute but you want to join our mission, click on JOIN THE TEAM to become a fundraiser yourself and spread the word.
