My name is Gvantsa Khizanishvili, I am a medical doctor and human rights activist. I am starting the Girl's Running Club in four rural areas in Georgia (the Country). I grew up in the society where discrimination on the basis of sex is rampant and all too frequently begins in the earliest stages of life. Girls encountered major obstacles and discrimination and they experience them early! Physical activity such as sports and running still is often considered only for boys and girls are frequently discouraged from participating in running and other sporting activities. This is one of the reasons I decided to create the Girl's Running Club; a space to empower girls with running to transform girl's lives.
I started running when I was a girl which empowered me greatly in achieving goals in education and become confident. Running played an essential role in my journey to becoming a young women. I realized that girls are powerful, girls have limitless potential and girls can change the world. As a young adult I also realized that in my country girls continue to lack access to opportunities; it’s wrong and unjust. The empowerment of girls, awareness and education, is essential to fight against forms of gender inequality within family and society. It is critical to invest in girl's education and health, increase public awareness of the value of women, and strengthen girls’ self-esteem, self-image and status.
What is The Girl's Running Club?
The mission of the Girl's Running Club is to empower girls (12-16 years old) in rural areas of Georgia by starting running clubs to empower and educate girls, to promote gender equality, youth participation and healthy lifestyles. To raise awareness of young girls to make informed and responsible decisions about their health, empower girls to finish school and choose their future. Additionally, it would create a youth-led girls running club using peer-to-peer education method to empower and educate girls about health, rights and gender equality.
100% of all donations will be used to buy running shoes and sportswear for girls involved in Girl's Running Club.
Why The Girl's Running Club?
What it boils down to is simple, it's a JUST thing to do! Sports, and in this case running, is an ideal way to reach, educate and inspire young girls in a language they understand. Sports clubs are comprehensive, bottom-up interventions employing educational techniques and communication styles that help youth build skills related to teamwork, leadership and confidence. Running has a wide variety of beneficial health effects for everyone, including young girls. Fitness, health, self-esteem and even team-building skills are all developed through running. Please consider making a donation to help fund The Girl's Running Club.
