So, what’s up?
This May, we will be offering a five-week introspective photography and writing course for girls aged 14 to 18. It will be offered at the newly opened the Girls Way center in Missoula, Montana- a safe and healthy place for girls to learn, explore and grow.
Arts education, particularly photography education, is typically anemic in Missoula school systems. Photography is an effective storytelling tool that allows people to represent their point of view and personal narrative. This class provides an opportunity for girls to explore themselves, their community, their values and their vision. The curriculum is specifically designed to teach photography basics as well as symbolism, metaphor, and self-expression through art.
Why just girls?
Both girls and boys have powerful, unique vision. But for teenagers, it is often helpful to create a community of peers gathered around common goals, gender, and experiences. When these things align, teens can learn, reflect, and enjoy themselves more.
What will the class be like?
The class will be once a week for five weeks. Each week, we will introduce new information, discuss photography, peer review and explain goals and assignments for the next week. Because the students are teens, they will do much of their photography at home and in their community. This will allow them to reflect, consider their own thoughts and work creatively within their own environment. They will write about their work through journaling, poetry, and prose. The class will culminate in a First Friday show during the first week of June, which will allow the girls to showcase their work.
