Girls Empowered Group Home
Organized by: Patricia Orr
West Valley Educational Group, LLC /Girls Empowered serves young girls who are close to aging out of foster care and are not currently living with a permanent family. We specialize in self-sufficiency training for youths between the ages of 10-17. I started Girls Empowered to especially help the girls who are sure to face many challenges as they move towards independence. I want to empower them with the skills they'll need to navigate through the real world.
Imagine a young girl turning 18 who must now provide her own basic needs? Now imagine that same girl who knows nothing about how the "world" works!
I know exactly how this feels because it happened to me on my 18th birthday. Living in the streets without money was a scary, lonely and difficult time for me. My personal safety was always my first priority; and because of my quick thinking, I was able to get myself out of some really bad situations.
Girls Empowered will serve young girls who will face probably some of the same challenges as they transition into their independence. Basic survival skills like knowing to read a map or use public transportation are critical skills not to mention personal safety. These are just a couple of areas Girls Empowered will focus on and will be a part of their daily living. We will also incorporate household management and career planning as part of the program through real world experiences. I know firsthand what these girls may encounter and what it takes to get to the next step. The skills I will teach them may prove to be invaluable for these soon to be young adults.
I want this to be a residential program because I feel it will have the best impact rather than from a classroom/ theoretical approach. In order to obtain the licensure to accept participants, the facility must be set up and ready to go. The money will be used to secure the 5 bedroom residence and to purchase beds, dressers and other household furniture for a group of 5 girls. In addition to household furniture, the residence will need office equipment and supplies. Linens, cookware and other small household goods.
