BENEFITING: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
ORGANIZER: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Hi there! As you may know, I'm a little obsessed with races: running them, volunteering at them, awkwardly crying while watching total strangers cross the finish line. Running races for me has never been about being fast, but rather about proving to myself that I can do something I never thought I could...which is exactly how I felt when I ran the NYC Marathon in 2015. As corny as it sounds, running has taught me that I literally can achieve the unachievable (and that foam rollers are magic), and it's a lesson I love passing on to others.
When I was a senior in college, I had the opportunity to share this lesson as a coach for an organization called Girls on the Run.
GOTR is a program that combines positive youth development with running. Girls in 3rd to 5th grade participate in lessons about teamwork, self respect, healthy relationships, and other important skills that help them navigate the challenges they face at that age, all while training for a 5K race. In just 12 weeks, I witnessed the effect that this program had on building the girls' self-confidence, and watching them cheer each other on as they achieved their goal of running 3.1 miles (no matter how fast or slow) confirmed my thoughts on the positive impact running can have on a person's life.
Girls on the Run holds a special place in my heart, especially now that I have a 10-year-old cousin in the program, and so this year I've signed up to run the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon as a GOTR NYC SoleMate! My goal is to raise at least $3,000 by race day, November 6th…and I need your help! Making a donation is easy—just click the “Donate" button on this page to give through my secure fundraising site.
Curious what your giving can do for GOTR?
- $35 can sponsor a pair of running shoes for one girl
- $150 can fund healthy snacks & a pair of running shoes for 3 girls
- $300 can support a full season scholarship, plus snacks and shoes for one girl
- $1,500 can support 5 girls (half a team!) for a full season
I hope you will join me to further this great cause! Your support as I train for my second marathon means the world to me, and I thank you in advance :)
