BENEFITING: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
ORGANIZER: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Hi friends and family!
On November 6 I will be running 26.2 miles through the streets of NYC in the 2016 New York City Marathon! I quickly became crazy about this city after moving here six years ago, and more than two years ago now, I started running as a way to spend more time outside in it. I quickly found that there is nothing that can clear my head after a busy day like some speed training with my friends from Harlem Run or get me ready for the week ahead like a long Sunday run in the always beautiful Central Park.
But I also have to acknowledge a time in my life when I strongly disliked running. My elementary, but more so my middle school days were lacking in physical activity, and my health and self-esteem suffered as result. When I learned about Girls on the Run NYC, a non-profit organization that offers running based youth development programs, I decided to get involved so that girls have a special place to discover a love of this sport early in their lives.
As participants in Girls on the Run, third through eighth graders learn valuable life skills under the guidance of volunteer female coaches and work together towards the goal of running a 5k race after just 12 weeks—an impressive distance for young legs! Through this program, girls at a stage of their lives when receiving positive messages about their worth could not be more important have a unique opportunity to challenge themselves, learn to be good teammates, and feel confident in who they are.
I am honored to be running the marathon as a Girls on the Run SoleMate, helping to raise funds for this transformational program that will serve upwards of 1,500 girls in 2016. Gifts of any size make a big difference for the 60% of participants who receive scholarships to cover the cost of their involvement. Thank you SO much for supporting my marathon journey by helping to bring fitness-based programming to girls across NYC.
