THE STORY:

A crazy, exhilerating, terrifying, yet joyful thing happened a few nights ago.  I not only became a new volunteer for Girls on the Run, but I decided to go all in and become a SoulMate.  As a SoulMate, I will be running for GOTR at the 2016 NYC Marathon!

I honestly thought I was done with long distance running, but in that basement of Jack Rabbit's (running store here in NYC), I was overcome by the mission of GOTR and was compelled to do all that I could to support.  Even if supporting means throwing myself into a grueling 12-week training (note: 16-18 is recommended).  EEEK!

As the realization of my descision started to sink in, the feeling of fear came over me.  However, my past experience came back to remind me that running 6 Half Marathons, 1 Full, and countless smaller races, I don't run because training is super fun, and black toe nails are a really cool battle scar.  I run, for the feeling of race day.  The culmitating day of all your hard work, all 30,000 others hard work, to come to fruition.  Race day is a magical day, where the sense of accomplishement that washes over you when you cross that finish line, is beyond any words that I can articulate.

Growing up, I played baseball.  Hardball.  Exclusively with boys until the age of 13.  I didn't have another girl on my team until I started playing high school varsity softball at the age of 15.  Sure I learned A LOT about being tough.  But I always had to prove my worth.  Not only to my male teammates, but my male teammates fathers.  "Is that a girl on the team?" "Yep, and I'm better than your son!"  That was the common theme of my childhood.  Those years set the foundation for my mental toughness, but didn't do so much good for my self-esteem.

Having a coaching staff and team of strong, confident, like-minded women growing up (like GOTR) would have benefitted me more than I could ever imagine.  Now a days, girls are bombarded with countless messages about their worth, their image, and their abilities.  GOTR helps them to become authors of their own stories.

GOTR inspires girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident.

They envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldy pursue her dreams.

And that is why GOTR is so important to me. I am all in.

Every run has a purose.  This run will be bigger than me.  This run will be for the young girls who don't believe in themselves, who feel they are not enough, who feel they cannot acheive the same level of success as boys.  This run will show these girls the exact opposite.  THEY ARE ENOUGH!  They can do it all.  I run, so one day they can run as the best versions of themseleves.  I run for these girls.

All that being said, running as a GOTR SoulMate will be no small feat.  I have pledged to raise $3,500 for this amazing organization.  And with your support, I can get there.

Your generosity can fund the program in many ways.  Currently 60% of the girls in the program come from low-income communities.  Funds raised by SoulMates, allow these girls scholorship and subsidry support to participate in this life-changing program.

$35: sponsor a pair of running sneakers

$150: can fund healthy snacks and pair of sneakers to 3 girls

$300: can support a full season scholorship, snacks, and sneakers for 1 girl

The NYC Marathon is the race.  Nov 6, 2016 is the day.  With your support, it will mean so much more.  Please help me put meaning to the miles.

Thank you so much, I truely appreciate your help.

Sara

My favorite quote from Nike Global Head Couch Chris Benett - "Elite is not elistist.  It just means being the most elite version of yourself."

GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC wrote -

Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8-20 girls, we teach life skills through fun, engaging lessons and conversation-based running games. The 24-lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Over the course of the program, girls will develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful a contribution to community and society.
