BENEFITING: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
ORGANIZER: GIRLS ON THE RUN NYC
EVENT DATE: Mar 20, 2016
This fall I got to spend two afternoons a week with 19 enthusiastic young ladies at my school, KIPP Academy Elementary, as part of the Girls on the Run program. (See the wonderfully well-crafted description of the program below.). Throughout the 12 weeks I saw the girls grow in self-knowledge, endurance, compassion, and confidence- both physical and emotional transformation. All of the girls in our program received financial assistance from Girls on the Run that allowed them to access this amazing opportunity. I'm running to support Girls on the Run so that all girls across New York City will have this same chance.
Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8-20 girls, we teach life skills through fun, engaging lessons and conversation-based running games. The 24-lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork, and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. Over the course of the program, girls will develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful a contribution to community and society.
