Founded in 2009 Girls on the Run of Central Maryland will serve over 2500 girls across Carroll and Howard Counties this program year. Girls on the Run of Central Maryland empowers girls to be healthy, joyful, and confident using a unique, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The program is delivered over a 10-week season by trained volunteer coaches who guide girls through running games and conversations designed to teach skills that will last a lifetime. At each season’s end, the girls complete a non-competitive 5K as their capstone achievement: a memorable experience of healthy goal setting and success. Studies show that as girls mature from childhood to adolescence, levels of physical activity decline and risk for unhealthy outcomes like obesity, diabetes and depression become more prevalent. Multiple factors are associated with lower physical activity among girls, including decline in perceived competence, self-esteem, and parental and peer support. For this reason, Girls on the Run of Central Maryland is an essential program as it is changing girls’ behaviors and attitudes towards physical activity. 100% of every dollar raised will go directly towards providing scholarships to girls in need in Carroll and Howard counties.
