THE STORY:

Noelle is running in the Kid's Marathon and wanted to select a charity to run for.  After reading through all the teams participating in the Pittsburgh Marathon, she selected this one.  Her reasoning was for "Girl Power" and because she knows how important it is to feel good about yourself.

Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. The 12-week program for 3rd-8th grade girls combines training for a 5K event along with lessons on making healthy choices.  Each lesson of the curriculum uses warm-ups and workouts that encourage emotional, mental, social, and physical well being. At the end of the 12 week season, all of our local Girls on the Run teams come together for a culminating 5K event and celebration.

Girls on the Run SoleMates is the charity runner program of Girls on the Run, and locally benefits Girls on the Run of Magee-Womens Hospital. Here in western Pennsylvania, over 1,000 girls a year participate in Girls on the Run, and nearly 60% of girls request partial to full program scholarships. We are dedicated to educating and preparing all girls for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living, and to this day have not turned any girl away who is in need of financial assistance to participate.

By becoming a SoleMate, you are doing much more than achieving your personal fitness goal, you are helping to provide many girls in our communities with the values and life lessons of the Girls on the Run program. Your support and contributions from friends and family will introduce many young girls to the benefits of running, learn to celebrate their physical and emotional health, and recognize their uniqueness and inner strength. Our amazing team of SoleMates for the 2012 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon events raised over $20,000 for  program scholarships! Help us this year in reaching our goal of $30,000 and through your training and experience, we hope you find the same sense of accomplishment, pride, and joy as these young girls do when they cross the finish line of their first 5K! Use the power of your running to help make a difference in the lives of girls!
