THE STORY:

WHAT IS GIRLS WHO CODE?

Launched in Spring 2012, Girls Who Code is a national nonprofit organization working to close the gender gap in technology and engineering. With support from public and private partners, Girls Who Code works to educate, inspire, and equip high school girls with the skills and resources to pursue opportunities in engineering and technology fields.

Together with leading educators, engineers, and entrepreneurs, Girls Who Code has developed a new model for computer science education, pairing intensive instruction in robotics, web design, and mobile development with high-touch mentorship led by the industry's top female developers and entrepreneurs. In its inaugural program, Girls Who Code empowered young women from New York City’s five boroughs and will launch programs in New York, San Francisco, San Jose, and Detroit in 2013.

In its signature 8-week program, Girls Who Code embeds 20 high school juniors inside a technology company or university setting from 9-5pm each day. Here, young women get hands-on experience in computing concepts, programming fundamentals, mobile phone development, robotics, and web development and design.

Key programmatic components of the Girls Who Code Immersion Program include:

  1. SKILLS: 320+ hours of intensive instruction in CS, robotics, algorithms, web design, and mobile development

  2. EXPOSURE: 50+ speakers, demos, workshops, and presentations from female engineers and entrepreneurs; field trips to technology companies, startups, academic institutions and more

  3. MENTORSHIP: Top female executives, entrepreneurs and engineers provide career and academic mentorship

The Girls Who Code program curriculum is designed and research-proven to engage and encourage young women in computer science. Each topic, activity and speaker is chosen to empower the young women with the skills to contribute to their schools and communities; following the program, participants are equipped to teach others, develop products and solutions for local businesses and communities, and continue their learnings in academia, internships, and jobs.

In 2012, Girls Who Code laid the foundation for a strong, successful organization poised to close the gender gap in the technology and engineering fields. In just nine months of operation, Girls Who Code mobilized support from the public and private sector, launched to widespread media coverage and overwhelming public support, raised seed funding from individual, corporate and foundation donors, developed and delivered a successful program in New York City, and announced plans for nationwide expansion at its inaugural gala at the New York Stock Exchange.

With this foundation and support, the organization enters 2013 with exciting plans for continued growth and increased impact. Girls Who Code will expand its signature programs to cities across the country, and together with partners like AT&T, Goldman Sachs, Intel, and ebay, will launch in New York, Detroit, San Francisco, and San Jose in summer 2013. In parallel, 2013 marks the roll out of Girls Who Code Clubs, a program based on the Girls Who Code curriculum designed for implementation in schools nationwide. Together, these programs work to inspire, educate, and empower young women with the skills and resources to pursue academics and careers in computing fields.
