Don't talk about it be about it!
GirlTrek is a national nonprofit movement that inspires Black girls and women, whose communities are most at risk from obesity, related illness, to live healthier, more fulfilled lives!
If we could we would run this movement on love and passion alone, but in the real world we need dollas! So Vanessa, half of the dynamic duo that runs this great organization, has decided to take one for the team! This fall she will set out on an epic bike ride from New York City to Washington DC to raise funds for the amazing community of ladies who depend on GirlTrek to bring that heat.
We know that in today's world of super sports heroes and Amazing Race, Survivor wannabees that there are lots of people out there doing mucho athletic stuff. But this is different! First off, Vanessa is NOT an athlete or a fitness buff. She's just your average around the way girl (baby hair pumpin, lip gloss shinning - and yes she's in the mood for wining and dining). She's all amateur people! She got her first bike - ever - last year in August 2010. She's no Lance Armstrong but what she lacks in skill and experience she makes up for in heart.
The details of her GirlTrek ride are pretty dang awesome. A five-day, self-contained bike ride from lower Manhattan to the heart of our nations capital. She's rolling clean on a 2011 Specialized Ruby Elite. She's got a pretty awesome riding companion (he put a ring on it) and she's motivated by the thousands of women who put the MOVE back in movement with GirlTrek.
All of this sounds compelling, but we know you probably want a few more details like what does your donation support? In 2011 we had over 3000 women take our annual 10-week walking challenge. In 2012 we plan to go big or go home. Your donation will help us double the number of Trekkers who hit the streets and walk it out for their health. Many of our Trekkers are ready for that next step. They want to dream big and hustle but they can't afford it. We want to support and train 100 women from across the country to become healthy role models in their community by sponsoring them as they train for their ultimate health dream -running a marathon, learning to swim, taking the ultimate hiking trip. But that takes money! Still hesitating to pull out that cash? Well do it for the kid’s man!!! See those cute, smiling faces looking up at you in picture #4? That's part of our Newark Trek Team, a group of middle school girls that participates in GirlTrek each year. In 2012 we want to launch two new Trek teams in Washington DC and Baltimore. All of these great plans take the support of dedicated, committed citizens like you.
A little goes a long way. (Picture us giving a Sunday morning sermon right now and the tithing plate is headed your way). We don't care if you give a little or a lot. Whatever you give, give from the heart and we are sure that it will come back to you ten fold in good will and blessings from the universe. Maybe this week you skip the Starbucks coffee runs and put $20 bucks to GirlTrek instead (double white mochas ain't cheap!). Or maybe you can do more and you give that. Just start at $1 and add a zero or two until you feel comfortable.
After you've made your donation you'll be getting a personal thank you from Vanessa on behalf of the very grateful GirlTrek community.
Now that you've got the rundown and we've got you all pumped up, pull out that credit card and push that donate button. GirlTrek needs your support!
