Dearest Giselle, Just a note…
Dearest Giselle,
Just a note to say thank you. With your support, I raised almost $7000 dollars for Sandy Hook Promise.

I include here the letter I wrote to the Sandy Hook people:
Dear all,
I’m writing to thank you for allowing me to run on behalf of Sandy Hook Promise. The entire experience, from the lottery through the training, the dinner party the night before, and the race itself, was absolutely amazing. I was running for a cause I deeply believe in, in the memory of families whose stories I will carry with me for the rest of my life, for my own children and those of my friends and fellow citizens, for the training challenge (and mental health benefits!), and for my lifelong goal of running the marathon. (There is only one, in my mind). The race itself was astonishingly joyful. I ran into Lisa (who was running for Dylan’s Wings) and her friend on the ferry and ran the first 20 miles with them. (Carl was running his 5th, so we had a guide). At mile 16, I thought: This is utterly perfect. The whole way, I was accompanied and encouraged by all these cheering strangers, and then I got to see the face of my partner, Liza, and daughter Maeve, at mile 16. 5, then those of my son Jonas, and my in-laws at mile 22, and my long-term running partner, Molly, at mile 24. Above all, I felt buoyed by the pleasure of the event, and the cause, people calling my name, and those who called “Sandy Hook!” including one family who grabbed my hand to shake it. There was a wonderful feeling of positive human encouragement, of goal-pursuing, over a long haul. At the end, I couldn’t help but think that the goal of limiting gun violence is very similar to that of running a marathon: both are done, and supported, by good people, both are full of pain but also great joy. I wish the big cause could be achieved in the same time-frame, but I know that the popular support is with us, that the life-affirming encouragement is coming from all street corners and intersections, and that we will win in the end. We already are.
I look forward to seeing all the pictures, and hearing all the stories. My legs are finally working again and I ate a box of Mac’n’cheese for breakfast. The New York Times tells me my time was 5 hours, 2 minutes, and 13 seconds.
With love and thanks,
Julie
