BENEFITING: Girls Empowerment Network
Join us in helping girls find their power. For 20 years, Girls Empowerment Network (GEN) has been a trusted resource for young women in Texas; a place for them to get support and learn skills they so desperately need.
Unfortunately, the factors that chip away at girls’ self-esteem are reaching them at younger and younger ages and the work is far from done. Did you know that a study of girls ages 3-6 showed that nearly 50% of them were already worried about their weight? It’s also been found that three-fourths of girls with low self-esteem engage in harmful activities, such as disordered eating, bullying, smoking, or drinking.
Here at GEN we work to change that course. Thankfully, girls across Texas are learning the information and skills they need to be confident and successful in safe, girl-focused spaces in GEN’s programs. For 20 years now we have been helping girls find their power.
We recently caught up with one such girl, an 8th grader named Kasey, and her mom, Kelly. Kasey has been involved in multiple programs with GEN. Kasey explained how GEN has helped her find her power: “I have become more energetic, and my mom has noticed that I am happier. I have been able to talk about some of the things that are bringing me down.” Kelly agrees. She said that because of GEN, “I’ve seen Kasey grow in her confidence. She has become much more comfortable with herself.”
We also spoke with Katie, an elementary teacher who supports GEN programming in her school and also has enrolled her daughter, Iris. Katie sees the need for GEN’s programming as absolutely critical: “I have so many girls that I’ve taught and if somebody could’ve stepped in and given them that extra boost, it would’ve really altered the course of things. There’s such a great need out there. These are just lovely little people who have chaos all around them. It would be such a wonderful thing to provide more of these kind, creative girls tools to be able to manage the stresses in their lives, because there are many stresses.”
You can be the person stepping up for these girls; helping them find their power. Just $36 provides someone like Kasey or Iris with 2 hours of afterschool programming.
Will you consider donating $36? GEN reaches more than 13,000 people a year, and 87% of our programming is offered at no cost to participants. This means that your gift is directly impacting young women like these.
Please consider making a gift of $36 to support programs that instill the confidence necessary for girls to make positive choices for a lifetime. Evaluation results prove that girls who are very engaged with our long-term programming have higher rates of school attendance and are less likely to get into trouble. On behalf of the girls you will empower, we thank you.
