Every girl deserves the chance to feel good about themselves - that they can change the world. It took me a long time to finally accept who I am and feel good about myself, but I want to try and help. And if guys can have No Shave November, why can't girls have June Dresses?
June Dresses is a challenge started in Canada to benefit the United Way of Calgary and their All In For Girls initiative. The concept is simple - ladies wear skirts or dresses for all thirty days in June. Just as you would sponsor a guy for not shaving in November to see how crazy his facial hair can get, so can you sponsor a lady in your life to see if she can wear skirts or dresses for thirty days straight. While June Dresses itself is a fairly new project, I'm hoping to bring the fun stateside by supporting a female friendly charity in my community.
Girls For A Change is a nationwide charity fund that aims to give girls the tools, resources, and partnerships to learn valuable problem solving skills and the voice and ability to realize their full potential. By creating Girls Action Groups, they provide a safe, free after school project to help girls learn and be supported by other females. The teams are small to promote authentic relationships that girls can use as they journey through their educational years and into careers. They identify challenges in their communities and design and implement creative solutions for those challenges, as a team.
So if the simplest thing I can do to help them and try to bring light and support to their cause, is wearing dresses and skirts during one of the warmest months of the year? Bring on the sundresses, because we're doing this.
This is my first year ever tackling a challenge like this, so my goal is fairly low, but please, whatever you can spare will go to a worthy cause. I'll be posting my progress on my Instagram, @jordanbartowski, with the hashtag #junedresses, if you'd like to follow along! I'll also compile a video using the One Second Everyday app to chart the progress of each dress or skirt. The challenge starts Sunday, June 1st, so wish me luck!
