THE STORY:

RUTH ELLIS CENTER INC wrote -

Twenty dedicated people met in Detroit 16 years ago to address the needs of LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness, most often due to family rejection. They established a Drop-In Center that provides hot meals, access to shelter and the other basic resources these young people need the most. It was named for Ruth Ellis, a courageous woman who opened her home to the Detroit LGBTQ community in the 1930’s.

October 1, a new effort launched to help families support their LGBTQ children and reduce the number who run away, get kicked out or end up in the Child Welfare or Juvenile Justice systems. This intensive effort to help families stay together is the first of its kind in the country.

More than 300 Child Protective Service workers will be trained to identify cases where a child’s sexual orientation, gender identity or expression may be factors in abuse or neglect investigations. Families will be referred to Ruth Ellis Center’s Family Group Decision Making (FGDM) program for up to 13 months of intensive support services. The ultimate goal is to promote safety and stability for LGBTQ youth in their own homes.

In addition, Ruth Ellis Center operates a 10,000 square foot service location in Highland Park and the ONLY residential foster care program specifically for LGBTQ youth in the midwest. Last year, more than 500 LGBTQ young people benefitted from services, resulting in almost 5,000 service contacts, and 10,000 meals served. Youth can also access counseling and substance use services and in 2016, they will also benefit from primary health care services offered on site when construction of the Health & Wellness Center is completed.

We have been recognized by the White House for our work in serving LGBTQ homeless and at-risk youth, and publicly supported by Emmy Award winning comedienne Wanda Sykes, Emmy Award winning writer and comedian Bruce Vilanch, and two time Grammy Award winning band, FUN.

Ruth Ellis Center was created by concerned people like YOU!
