BENEFITING: WARM HEART WORLDWIDE INC
Nit grew up the daughter of a woman who plants corn with a stick. In August, Nit leaves for Bangkok to attend the best university in Thailand. Aom was abandoned by her child prostitute mother when she was two weeks old. Next term, Aom starts at the best vocational-technical school in Chiang Mai. New grew up with pigs under her house. Next year, New will be a senior in high school and applying to college.
What do all of these kids have in common?
I want to invite you to join me in supporting Warm Heart so that Warm Heart can go on giving bright futures to kids like Nit, Aom and New.
Warm Heart kids are Hill Tribe minorities like Nit and New, or Thai like Aom. Their families are among the poorest of the poor in North Thailand where more than a third of the population lives on less than $1.50 per day. Their villages have no schools. Their parents are illiterate in a region where the average level of education is just fourth grade. Their parents are unskilled laborers or sex workers who migrate to central or southern Thailand to find the worst kind of work. Smart and ambitious or clueless and passive, left at home, Warm Heart kids would grow up to be just like their parents: uneducated, unskilled and dirt poor.
But Warm Heart has given these kids a different life. At Warm Heart Children’s Home, children find clean, airy bedrooms with mosquito nets over every bed, and modern bathrooms with toilets, showers and sinks. They find caring house mothers who make sure that, yes, they scrub behind their ears, brush their teeth and pass inspection before the school bus arrives. They eat two nutritious meals a day and take lunch money to school with them every day. And they find clothes to wear. (Most Warm Heart kids arrive with tiny school knapsacks filled with all of their possessions – a clean t-shirt, a clean pair of shorts and a stuffed toy). All of these things make Warm Heart kids – our kids, really, because my wife and I live here with them – the present. They have safe places to sleep, enough to eat, clothes to wear and the opportunity to go to school.
But what about the future?
Our kids arrive at Warm Heart miles behind. Just being the child of illiterate parents is burden enough, but absent, illiterate parents unable to supply even life’s most basic needs? And what does it feel like to arrive in school, age twelve, unable to read or write or even speak Thai (the Hill Tribe minorities speak their own languages), the poorest kid in the class, the class dummy, the kid who doesn’t know how to play computer games?
Surviving in the present is really hard for our kids; even imagining the future is impossible.
But Warm Heart isn’t about just warm beds, meals and clothes.
Warm Heart is about the future, a future that involves real education, real skills, and real preparation to succeed in the big world out there. Warm Heart is about giving children real choices, about giving them the tools to tear themselves out of the poverty trap that has ensnared their families for generations.
We want to be able to provide extra, intensive, after school education, and to introduce our kids to young professionals from many different careers. We want to be able to offer them both higher educational opportunities and high quality apprenticeships to ensure that all of our children, whatever their interests and abilities, can succeed. We want our kids to want the world and to believe that it can be theirs.
This requires professional help and a serious academic development program.
And this requires a lot of money and resources.
This crowd funding project funds academic development by permitting Warm Heart to:
• Hire tutors to teach intensive Thai classes and supervise homework, six days a week.
• Hire tutors to teach special computer classes twice a week, Office and C++ coding.
• Provide study trips and cultural excursions to Chiang Mai.
• Arrange and pay for visits to Warm Heart by young professionals to talk about careers.
• Set up apprenticeships with local artisans and tradesmen.
• Provide scholarships for top quality vocational technical schools for two of our best students.
• Provide a college scholarship for a graduating senior.
• Hire a part time counsellor to develop mentoring, academic and guidance programs for Warm Heart.
These do not come cheap, but with these advantages Warm Heart children can compete with anyone.
We can’t do this alone. We need you. With your help, we can give these kids the future. You can give these kids the future.
It is an extraordinary gift to give – and it is yours to give.
