Giving back to my mom
Organized by: Estell Bartgis
Shortly after losing her job, my mom was diagnosed with colon cancer. Thankfully, she had always been good about saving money and had something to fall back on. And given her house sits on the same property as her parents; my grandparents, she also had a helping hand to fix things around her house. After about a year of chemo, her cancer disappeared; but so did most of her savings. After applying at numerous businesses to no avail, she finally went to a temp service. Despite a variety of short term jobs; she ended up using multiple credit cards to pay her utilities and mortgage and money borrowed from family to help with the rest. Then, roughly two years ago, our family was rocked to the core by the sudden death of her father. His passing ment she could no longer rely on her parents for help, since he was their main income source. While my husband and I and my extended family help her out when we're able, it hasn't been enough. She continues trying to find work, but her age and other health problems; I.B.S. mainly, seem to have worked against her in this economy. Most recently, her cable was shut off due to being so far behind on it and she is forever worried her electric will be next. I'd like to be able to raise enough money to pay off the majority of her credit cards; so the little money she accumulates can be put towards her utilities and other monthly expenses.
