Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10 – 18. More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease – COMBINED.
Every night in Los Angeles from 6 to 10 p.m. trained teen listeners volunteer at TEEN LINE to help their troubled peers. While many calls are local, volunteers take calls from all over the country because no matter where they are - there are teenagers in pain.
TEEN LINE was established in 1980 to help troubled teenagers in a way they would accept: teens helping teens. Each year nearly 10,000 teens contact our hotline via phone, text messaging or email. Tens of thousands of other teens are reached by our community outreach program going directly into schools and participating in events.
Over a hundred teens ages 14-18 volunteer annually at TEEN LINE, coming from schools all over Los Angeles. The training is rigorous and challenging, similar to the issues these teens will be helping their peers with as a hotline listener. The experience will help them to grow as people while providing listening, coping and problem-solving skills that benefit them for the rest of their lives.
Your support of TEEN LINE will help our hotline, community outreach program, and the training of our teen volunteers.
