Growing Kings is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides mentoring programs to underserved male youth in Birmingham City schools. Our goal is to offer young boys and men positive direction that will lead toward progressive thinking in all aspects of their lives.
Growing Kings operates with a mission to encourage and facilitate the critical thinking and positive attitudes of underserved male youth through systemic and targeted enrichment, research, and advocacy. By strictly adhering to our statement of value, “Building Stronger Men Everyday,” we position ourselves to become the catalyst for necessary, positive change and stand as the eminent exemplar of communal support and development.
Journey of a King is comprised of three individual curricula, each targeting a select population of underserved males in a given age range. The program engages students as early as the 4th grade and tracks and follows them throughout graduating high school.
- Prince Charming is a literacy and mathematics program aimed at improving critical thinking and analytic skills of 4th and 5th grade students, while establishing a foundation for personal and other cognitive developments.
- Measures of a Man is a program for 6th through 8th grade boys that focuses on character development, violence prevention, and personal enrichment.
- Scholars & Gentlemen is a program specifically designed for young men in 9th through 12th grades that focuses on culture, manhood, and entrepreneurship.
Since the organization’s inception in 2009, Journey of a King has impacted the lives of over 750 young boys and men of color, and their families. The organization has been able to realize its mission and achieve program results every school year.
