BENEFITING: URBAN GLEANERS
Urban Gleaners is a Portland based non-profit that "rescues" edible surplus food from grocery stores, restaurants, farmers markets and farms that would otherwise be thrown away. We redistribute this food through our local school system to students and their families that suffer from chronic hunger. With Oregon ranked 2nd in the nation for childhood hunger, gleaning is a critical weapon in the fight against hunger.
For the last 2 years, Urban Gleaners has lived in the same 1,000 square foot office and warehouse space. We've grown exponentially and can barely fit in our old home. With carrots and bread fighting for space next to our computers and file cabinets, Urban Gleaners is now in the processing of outfitting a new 5,000 square foot warehouse space, much more suited to the scale of our operation.
This project will be massively expensive, including pulling electric lines, plumbing, building walls and buying more fridges and more. With this space, however, we will be able to feed 1,200 more families through our programs.
Please help us build our new home so that we may feed as many hungry people as we possibly can.
- For every $5,000 raised, i'll spend a week living exclusively off of gleaned food. I will document my journey with photos and recipes.
- For any single donor who donates more than $1,000 they will receive a handmade, printed-to-order Urban Gleaners t-shirt.
