HELP IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER-
In southeast Michigan, more than one in four children are food insecure, meaning they are not sure if they will get all the food they need this week or this month. That is more than 271,000 children in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe and Livingston counties who do not have access, at all times, to enough food for an active, healthy life.
Studies show that even mild under-nourishment in children has a negative impact. “Child Hunger Ends Here," a report recently released by Gleaners, describes the physical, emotional and cognitive problems that can result when children do not get enough to eat. The economic impact of child hunger in the U.S. has been estimated to be as significant as $500 billion each year.
The good news is, we can solve child hunger. Gleaners is already working with corporate and community partners to get more meals to children during the summer months, when free school meals are not available. Through school-based mobile pantries and weekend back-packs of food, we are reaching more children with the food they need.
