A network of community change agents and movement builders across the United States and Southeast Asia launched Building Our Future (BOF) in 2013 as a movement platform to focus on community-first efforts across the globe that critically looked at how we can change value systems, practices and cultural norms in order to end gender-based violence and build safe, strong, and thriving families.
In its first two years, BOF raised awareness about the harmful effects of domestic violence and abusive international marriages on families in the US and abroad. We brought together Hmong American organizers across the country in 2014 so that they could go back to their local communities and organize local efforts. Then, in March 2015 BOF convened 30 community advocates from China, Laos, Vietnam and the US in Thailand to begin connecting our work globally.
At this gathering we explored how we could build global solidarity in order to make deep cultural shifts. We considered what else might be needed to dramatically change the practices that negatively impact Hmong women and girls’ lives across the globe, because we recognize that our liberations are tied together. We knew we could no longer afford to work just in our countries, because we witnessed how oppressive gender practices are exported from country to country, disproportionately having negative impacts of young people and women.
We found great value in our time together and agreed that organizing a Global Hmong Women's Summit that includes more countries, and that brings more people is critical to growing a movement that builds international solidarity that transforms harmful practices.
To enable us to bring more sisters from across the globe who would otherwise not be able to join, and to help us with the expenses of putting on a global gathering, we now turn to you to ask for your support to make this first Global Hmong Women’s Summit possible. We aim to hold the Summit in Thailand in December 2016 if we can raise the funds needed.
We believe this Summit will strengthen each country's local work, and deepen our relationships to each other across our global Hmong communities to support those who are leading transformative work that ends gender-based violence so that families can thrive.
We know that building strong and thriving communities free of gender-based violence takes all of us, so we ask for your generous financial donation to support this Summit.
Thank you for supporting us!
