BENEFITING: OUR TASK INC
The Global 2100 Project
Did you ever wonder how it feels to be a young person today?
Well, it feels frightening because our generation is in serious trouble. The Earth we young people will soon inherit is already severely damaged. Inequities and injustices are stirring wars that we will be asked to fight.
It also feels frustrating because our generation doesn’t have money, power and influence to make the big changes that are needed. Yes, our leaders meet and talk, but seem unable to agree and act. It is difficult for us young people to even gain entry to important meetings on vital issues shaping our futures.
But to be young today is also inspiring because we young people know that we will live to see a new world created. Humans simply cannot continue to follow our current “Plan A” (business as usual) for another generation. A new “Plan B” must be developed and enacted during the lifetime of us young people. This is our generation’s task – daunting and inspiring.
There are, of course, a wide range of possibilities for our future. On one hand, to continue what we are doing now could create a nightmares of global proportions. On the other hand, the future might possibly be something quite different, attractive, and pleasant.
We young people believe a brighter future is possible, and we want to learn how. That’s why we at Our Task are launching the Global 2100 Project . Through Global 2100, we will reach out to thoughtful young adults, activists, scholars, and leaders and gather their ideas on how best to manage human affairs through the 21st Century. We will assess these “Plan Bs” using the best models and data now available from international agencies and other sources. Our goal is not just to produce another report, but to inspire a thoughtful, civil, worldwide intergenerational dialogue globally on the biggest issues of our collective future – the issues of justice and equity within the whole community of life on Earth.
Is such a big project even possible? Yes! It has been done once before in the Global 2000 Study prepared in for then U.S. President Jimmy Carter in 1980. It sold a million and a half copies in nine languages and influenced thinking throughout the world. Our new Global 2100 Project will be modeled on the original Global 2000 Study, and you can see a video here. Dr. Gerald O. Barney, who directed the earlier Study, has agreed to mentor the new project. Former President Jimmy Carter has sent a letter warmly endorsing the Global 2100 Project.
The Global 2100 Project is your opportunity to support and encourage thoughtful young adults everywhere as they address the most difficult task any generation has ever faced. Your donations will help us reach the initial $10,000 needed to get this vital project off the ground. This is your opportunity to empower young people to become global-thinking leaders and to bring their passion and energy to the most pressing issues of our time. The stakes are very high for the future of Earth. Please give generously.
