THE STORY:

Hello,

Annually, during Rutgers University's Spring Break, there is a public health delegation that takes place in Nicaragua. This year, the delegation will take place from March 15-24, 2013, and will be led by my Global Health class from the University and will include the distribution of over-the-counter medications, personal care products, sanitation supplies, and first-aid supplies. We will also be purchasing hospital gowns, arts and crafts materials, and safer-sex supplies. I am writing to you, presenting you with an opportunity to make a difference by contributing to this process in any way that you can.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) designates Nicaragua a priority country, which implies a great call for help and cooperation to bridge the health gaps, both internally and with other countries in the Region of the Americas. In fact, about 42.5% of the population is living below the poverty line (World Bank, 2009), while 22% of children in the most disadvantaged quartile of the urban area suffer from malnutrition. While these statistics still may not provide a clear picture of the poor conditions in Nicaragua, compared to the lives that we lead in the United States, there is certainly a large disparity in quality of life.

In the United States, most of the population has shelter to live in, convenient and easy access to health services and medicine, and most importantly, food to eat everyday - privileges that many living here (myself included) take advantage of everyday. If you have any of these three things, it can be quite difficult to imagine what life is like with the other half. Many people, especially children, today still die from simple diseases due to dirty water, inadequate food, shelter and sanitation.

As a person of faith and conscience, I see a great need for giving a voice to our brothers and sisters in Latin America who struggle for a better life. A wonderful opportunity has arisen and I’d like to take advantage of it, but I need your help. This is not just a request for help, but also an opportunity for you to become part of the struggle in improving the quality of health and life in countries that need it most.

I am raising money for supplies that will aid in improving the health of the people in communities in Managua, Nicaragua and in the surrounding rural areas. Again, these include over-the-counter medications, personal care products, hospital gowns, arts and crafts materials, and sanitation, safer-sex and first-aid supplies.

Any amount that you can afford to give would be greatly appreciated, and I promise to keep you informed on the distribution process through pictures and personal testimonies upon my return, which can not occur without you, and which you will directly be a part of through your financial contribution an support.

Thank you in advance for any help that you can give, and thank you for your time. Please feel free to call me with any questions at 201-424-3469 or to e-mail me at stemplo@eden.rutgers.edu.

All the best,
Sheena Templo
