The resource curse is when countries that are rich in natural resources such as oil, gas or minerals, end up being poorer and more unequal than countries without them, often because of corruption and poor deals with multinational companies.
In 2011, exports of fuels and minerals from Africa were worth nearly nine times the value of aid received by Africa. If used properly, this wealth could lift millions of people out of poverty. However, more often than not political, military and business elites benefit at the expense of the people who see little or no development.
This is what Global Witness is fighting to change.
On Monday, Global Witness and its partners won a great victory when the UK government announced new regulations that made it compulsory for all UK oil, gas, and mining companies to publish details of payments made to governments for access to natural resources. This will make it easier for campaigners and citizens to ‘follow-the-money’ and hold their politicians to account. With your support we can continue this fight for transparency globally and bring an end to dirty deals.
Please support Global Witness and help end the resource curse
This week all donations (up to a total of $3,000) will be 100% matched, so now really is the best time to give.
The SEChallenge closes on Friday 5th December at 1:59:59pm ET (6:59:59pm GMT) so please give now!

Exposing the problem and campaigning for change
Global Witness investigates corruption, conflict, environmental destruction and the abuse of human rights linked to natural resources all over the world. We show how and why these injustices occur and campaign to change the international systems that make them possible. We uncovered the trade in ‘Blood Diamonds’ and its role in fueling African civil wars and our investigations exposed the corruption in oil, gas, and mining deals, illegal logging and deforestation, and attacks on environmental and land defenders.
Over the last 20 years we have led the way in ‘following the money’ and promoting cleaner and fairer deals between governments and big business.
Over the next 10 years our vision is to stop corrupt elites getting away with looting entire states and to dismantle the international systems that make this possible.
This is the urgent challenge that we face today. It affects everyone, rich and poor across the world, and we invite you to join our fight.
