BENEFITING: GLOBAL WITNESS FOUNDATION

EVENT: Skoll Foundation SE Challenge 2014

EVENT DATE: Oct 27, 2014

THE STORY:

SEChallenge finishes Friday 5th December 1:59:59pm ET (6:59:59pm GMT)

Every donation up to a total value of $3,000 will be doubled so please give now!

The resource curse is when countries that are rich in natural resources such as oil, gas or minerals, end up being poorer and more unequal than countries without them, often because of corruption and poor deals with multinational companies.

In 2011, exports of fuels and minerals from Africa were worth nearly nine times the value of aid received by Africa. If used properly, this wealth could lift millions of people out of poverty. However, more often than not political, military and business elites benefit at the expense of the people who see little or no development.

This is what Global Witness is fighting to change.

On Monday, Global Witness and its partners won a great victory when the UK government announced new regulations that made it compulsory for all UK oil, gas, and mining companies to publish details of payments made to governments for access to natural resources. This will make it easier for campaigners and citizens to ‘follow-the-money’ and hold their politicians to account.  With your support we can continue this fight for transparency globally and bring an end to dirty deals.

Please support Global Witness and help end the resource curse

This week all donations (up to a total of $3,000) will be 100% matched, so now really is the best time to give.

The SEChallenge closes on Friday 5th December at 1:59:59pm ET (6:59:59pm GMT) so please give now!

Join our fight and give now

Please give now so that the world’s poorest people can benefit from natural resources fairly and sustainably.

  • $30 will help us gather data for our investigations
  • $50 will help us buy undercover cameras to catch corruption in the act
  • $500 will help us collect evidence in the field e.g. from conflict mining areas
  • $5,000 will help us publish our findings to let the world know about these crimes
  • $10,000 will equip our investigators with the latest IT and communications technology, like secure laptops and satellite phones

Not only will your donation be matched by the Skoll Foundation, the Open Society Foundations will also donate an extra $10 for every $20 that you give.

Exposing the problem and campaigning for change

Global Witness investigates corruption, conflict, environmental destruction and the abuse of human rights linked to natural resources all over the world. We show how and why these injustices occur and campaign to change the international systems that make them possible.  We uncovered the trade in ‘Blood Diamonds’ and its role in fueling African civil wars and our investigations exposed the corruption in oil, gas, and mining deals, illegal logging and deforestation, and attacks on environmental and land defenders.

Our vision

Over the last 20 years we have led the way in ‘following the money’ and promoting cleaner and fairer deals between governments and big business.

Over the next 10 years our vision is to stop corrupt elites getting away with looting entire states and to dismantle the international systems that make this possible.

This is the urgent challenge that we face today.  It affects everyone, rich and poor across the world, and we invite you to join our fight.
