EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Hello. My name is Billy Baker and I'm a reporter for the Boston Globe. I'm running the Boston Marathon to raise money for Globe Santa, which delivers holiday gifts to local children in need. Created in 1956, Globe Santa has served more than 3 million children who might otherwise go without. The mission is staggering, as are the costs to keep it running.
To be honest, I'm not overly excited about running 26.2 miles. I've done it before, and I told myself I was done forever. But when the Globe announced we were creating an inaugural Globe Santa charity team for the marathon, I signed up. That's because Globe Santa has always resonated with me on a personal level, thanks to something that happened when I was a child in South Boston. A friend who lived across the street, a little girl, received almost nothing for Christmas. On Christmas day, while all the kids were out on the street with their new bikes and rollerblades and all that mess, the little girl was crying. It was hard to process. I didn't understand what she had done to upset Santa. And so my parents did something that was devastating at the time, but very noble in retrospect. Rather than let me think the girl had been "naughty," as the legend goes, they came clean and told me the truth about Santa. Her parents did the same. A lot of kids on my street had their hearts broken that day.
If running a marathon can help raise money to keep other kids from going through what my neighbor did on that Christmas morning many years ago, I'm honored to have the chance. (And enough with me complaining about getting to participate in the world's most prestigious marathon.)
Thanks in advance for any money you can contribute.
