My name is Gloria, and I am a 3 year breast cancer survivor. My journey started on June 2012. I had a mammogram on Wednesday the 13th, and a biopsy on Thursday June 14. On Friday June 15th, the doctor called and told me the results, “its cancer”. I was diagnosed with stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma. I was in total shock. There was no history of breast cancer in my family. How could this have happened? It was a long, brutal weekend. By Sunday night I just wanted it to be Monday- so I could call my doctor to say 'whatever I need to do, I am ready'.
I had surgery July 9th, and went through 16 weeks of two different chemo treatments. Then there was radiation. Through it all, I lost my hair, part of my breast and some feeling in my toes and right arm.
But that wasn't the end of my journey. I was looking for a way to feel like 'me' again. I was introduced to the HERS Foundation when I went to buy my wig. The first thing you notice when you walk through the door is how quaint and inviting the area is. Our warrior color- Pink- can be seen all around the space, providing comfort and acceptance.
The second thing I noticed is how caring everyone was. I had been to three other wig salons but none of them made me feel comfortable. At HERS, Jenna made me feel at ease. She gave me some advice and tried so many different wigs on me until I found one I loved. They also provided me with (special bra) and an arm compression sleeve.
I became a volunteer for HERS because I believe in what they are doing and what they represent. Their aftercare services and items are personal. They know what you have been through and can provide you with tools to help you with your journey. I have met such a dedicated group of women that are there to support all women healing from breast cancer. I have also made some wonderful friends through this organization.
Every person who walks in the HERS Breast Cancer 5K Walk & 5K/10K Run event has a reason for walking – and every person touched by cancer has a story to tell. These stories remind us that the HERS Breast Cancer Walk is more than a walk. Its progress we’re making together. The HERS Foundation helps make a tough journey a little easier, by providing post-surgical products and services, regardless of financial status. I am so thankful for their program and so proud to say I am now a volunteer.
