THE STORY:

Dear friends, thank you to everyone! I exceeded my wildest expectations for this race and raised $1621 for the shelter and services this organization provides here in Boston. My fundraiser has concluded, but you can still donate to this cause if you choose via this site, or please check out my most recent (November 2012) marathon in New York City! I am running this time in support of The BARKA Foundation, who help provide clean water and sanitation projects in Burkina Faso, Africa! Thanks again so much for your support!

BIB NUMBER IS 25499!

MY SHIRT WILL SAY "HOWIE" so that people along the race can say "Run Howie Run!"

AT&T is providing text alerts as I reach 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and the finish. Text "RUNNER" to 345678 and enter my bib number when prompted. You can also follow me from the Boston Athletic Association website - www.baa.org

I am raising money to support my entry in the 2012 Boston Marathon!

(Scroll down for 2012 Mileage Log!)

Why I am I doing this?

I AM RUNNING FOR ME!     I AM RUNNING FOR OTHERS!     I AM RUNNING FOR MY FUTURE!

1. I AM RUNNING FOR ME!   Some of you might not know this, but I used to weigh about 30lbs more than I do currently. I ran only to things or from things, and neither with any discernable speed nor gusto. That all changed about two years ago, when I moved to Boston and started taking stock of my life and my health. I cut daily intake of soda from my diet (except for occasional binges), began bicycling to work, and joined a gym. I didn't become a fitness nut overnight, nor at all really, I just learned to push myself a little further and faster each day... and realized that while I may never have a career in competitive sports, I am only competing against my own potential.

I have been tracking my weight for the past 500 days or so (I will post this shortly), and last year around this time I noticed that my relative lack of activity in the winter months caused me to reclaim some of the mass I had lost. This year, by setting a lofty goal to train for and subsequently run the marathon, I am hoping to prove that I can remain level, or perhaps even continue to lose weight year-round. As part of my accountability, I am also satellite tracking all of my outdoor runs (not treadmill runs) with my iPhone, and will do my best to provide an updated log of those as well on this site. Also, please feel free to join me whenever I run if you are in the Boston area.

2. I AM RUNNING FOR OTHERS!   Getting laid off this past November has helped me reevaluate my priorities in life. Sure, money is an issue until I find a new job (please feel free to help me with this), but it also makes me realize that a lot of people have it far worse in life, such as those who feel threatened in their relationships and do not know where to turn. I choose to support the Gay Men’s Domestic Violence Project because I am aware of the work they do for the GLBT community, among whom are many of my closest friends, in providing helplines, safe-housing, emotional support, and free legal counsel for people who need it.

3. I AM RUNNING FOR MY FUTURE!   Continuing with the life updates, I will be enrolling in medical school fall. I made it through the MCAT, application, and interview process, and am officially on my way to becoming a physician! I say that am running for the future, because I hope to speak from a position of empathy with my patients whenever possible. I hope to work with underserved populations such as the GLBT community and support the value of every individual. I also realize that the best medicine of the 21st century will be raising awareness of general health maintenance and preventative attention. I want to be able to advise my patents to climb that extra flight of steps, take that morning jog, or train to run that marathon, because I was able to convince myself to do it first. I’m not perfect… I have a long way to go in so many ways… but I am hoping to get a head start by taking 26.2 miles worth of tiny steps on April 16th, 2012!

So with that, please consider supporting me and my charity at the highest level you feel comfortable!

Thanks!

Howard Simpson

p.s. One simple extra request: If you donate and choose to either show only your first name, or show nothing at all, that's fine, but please shoot me a direct e-mail with your full name after you submit, just so I can thank you personally! Otherwise I might not know which of my friends with your name actually made the donation.

Notes on Donations:

1. Please turn OFF the "Optional Charity Processing Fee." If you contribute, you will see it on the next page where it asks for payment information and to confirm. I think it is rather sneaky and unfair that it gets tacked on to your bill by default, but it was not my decision to use this site. Hit "EDIT" next to the fee and select 0%.

2. I am displeased that this fundraising site forces a $10 minimum contribution. It alienates many people. If you are able to contribute less than $10, even just $1, thank you so much! Please consider handing me cash, or PayPal me to howiesimpson@gmail.com (make sure you set it to personal, so you aren't charged a fee!). It will take a few days, but I can enter the donations manually, still get you a receipt if you request, and your name will show up on the ticker with everyone else's!

One last disclaimer, I promise: The GMDVP was founded to address the needs of gay men fleeing abuse who were not welcomed at traditional "women's sheters" and had nowhere else to turn. Their services have since explanded and are provided to ANYONE without regard to their sexual orientation or gender identiies. Likewise, those who volunteer for the organization span a range of backgrounds and self-identify in many ways, straight and othewise.
