Three billion people around the world cook, eat, sleep, and work around indoor fires and old cookstoves every day. Toxic indoor smoke is the 4th worst health risk factor in developing countries - it leads to a number of health risks including low birth weight, pneumonia in young children, emphysema, cardiovascular disease, and lung cancer. Cookstove smoke claims 4 million lives each year, or one life every 8 seconds.
The photos to the left show how crazy this situation is. In the 4th picture you can see what a traditional cookstove looks like - a stove made from wood, rocks and soil, where the smoke goes straight into the home since there is no exhaust or chimney system. This smoke is what families breathe every single day - our volunteers have said it feels like being trapped inside a house fire. Could you breathe in toxic smoke every day of your life?
The 5th & 6th pictures show the damage the smoke does to the ceiling and walls of the home - toxic ash, soot and carcinogens permanently collect in the home and become a visual representation of what toxins are collecting in their lungs.
Good Neighbors builds more modern cookstoves for families using locally sourced materials and incorporates a chimney that channels the smoke straight out of their home, as shown in the 6th and 7th photos.
We are fixing this and YOU can help us. Please support the members of our ASICS LA Marathon team as they run to raise money to build more cookstoves for families in need throughout Guatemala. You can truly save lives of men, women, and children, one cookstove at a time.
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING TEAM GOOD NEIGHBORS!!!
